It shouldn’t take until school for children to find their voice.

During my time as a primary teacher, I saw first-hand the impact that early language has on a child’s ability to learn.

I worked with children who were already struggling, not because they couldn’t learn, but because they didn’t yet have the language, vocabulary and confidence to access it.

That stayed with me.

As my career progressed, I became an English Lead, overseeing the teaching of reading and writing across the whole school. Through this, one thing became increasingly clear.

The earlier we support language development, the greater the impact.

That understanding became even more personal when I had my son, Archie.

Archie experienced challenges with communication, delayed speech and language as a result of his health condition. Like many parents, I wanted to support him in the best way possible, but I also began to realise just how important those early interactions were. The conversations, the repetition, the shared stories.

I needed to find a different approach.

Using my background in education, I began developing a story-led approach at home, bringing books to life through play, interaction and meaningful connection.

This became the foundation of what is now Read, Play, Create.

Through this approach, I saw something incredible.

As Archie became more engaged in stories and play, his language began to grow. His confidence increased. He found his voice.

That moment changed everything.

What started as a way to support my own child has now grown into something much bigger.

Read, Play, Create now supports families across the Bromsgrove area, with over 270 families experiencing the sessions and many noticing more talking at home, increased confidence and a growing love of stories.

My focus is simple.

To help children develop the language and confidence they need before starting school, through story-led play that feels natural, engaging and accessible.

Because early language matters.

And every child deserves to feel confident finding their voice.
