English & Literacy Consultancy
Practical, experienced support to strengthen reading, writing, oracy and progression across primary education.
Sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint why pupils aren't making the progress we'd hoped for, or where changes to teaching, planning or curriculum might make the biggest difference.
Read, Play, Create offers practical English and literacy consultancy, drawing on extensive classroom and subject leadership experience.
Whether you're looking to strengthen whole-class reading, develop writing outcomes, review progression or support your English leadership team, the aim is to identify what matters most and make improvements that are realistic, purposeful and manageable.
How I can support your setting

Reading & Comprehension
Strengthening whole-class reading, vocabulary, comprehension and reading progression across KS1 and KS2.

Writing Development
Developing writing through purposeful teaching, modelling, scaffolding, sentence construction and progression.

English Leadership & Curriculum
Supporting English leads with curriculum review, sequencing, monitoring, identifying priorities and planning improvement.
Focused English & Literacy Support
A fresh pair of experienced eyes on your English curriculum, teaching and the progress pupils are making.
Sometimes schools know where they want to improve. At other times, the challenge is understanding why a particular area of English isn't having the impact expected.
Focused consultancy can help schools look more closely at their current approaches to reading, writing and oracy, recognising strengths and identifying where development would be most useful.
Depending on your priorities, support might include:
-
Reviewing English curriculum intent, sequencing and progression
-
Looking at approaches to whole-class reading and comprehension
-
Exploring writing outcomes, modelling and scaffolding
-
Reviewing planning, pupils' work and assessment information
-
Supporting English leaders to identify strengths and priorities
-
Developing clear, practical next steps for improvement
The aim isn't to introduce another initiative. It's to strengthen the teaching and learning already happening in your school.
Support is tailored to your school's priorities, with the format and cost agreed before any work begins.

Bespoke Consultancy
Not every school needs the same support.
Every school has different strengths, challenges and priorities.
You might be reviewing your whole English curriculum, noticing inconsistencies in how writing is taught across year groups, or looking for ways to strengthen comprehension and vocabulary development.
You may already have a clear improvement priority, or you might simply want an experienced outside perspective to help decide where to focus.
Support can be shaped around a particular year group, phase, aspect of English or wider subject leadership priority.
We'll start with what's happening in your school, not a predetermined package.
Staff Development
From review to development
Improving outcomes in English isn't just about what is written in the curriculum. It's also about the confidence, knowledge and everyday teaching decisions of the staff delivering it.
Alongside consultancy, I offer practical staff development that can be delivered as a standalone session or shaped around priorities identified through a review.

A Practical Supportive
Approach
Having spent years teaching and leading English, I understand the pressures schools face and how difficult it can be to balance curriculum expectations, pupil needs and the realities of everyday teaching.
I'm not interested in adding more paperwork, creating unnecessary systems or recommending changes simply for the sake of change.
My approach is to understand what your school is trying to achieve, recognise what is already working and identify where carefully chosen improvements could make a real difference.
Whether we're looking at reading, writing, oracy or curriculum progression, the focus remains on what pupils need to learn, how we support them to get there and what we can do next.
Practical. Reflective. Manageable.
